Do We All Go a Bit Whacky During a Full Moon?
The Full Moon this week seems to have sent us all into a spin! Everyone has been reporting disturbed sleep, crazy dreams and forgetfulness; perhaps you have noticed this too?
My question today though is: ‘do we actually go a bit whacky during the Full Moon?’
Let’s dig into it a bit more to find out if we really can keep blaming the Moon for our energetic shifts, or if we need to find something else in the Universe to blame!
It turns out that we have blamed the Full Moon for our odd behaviour for as long as we have been telling stories about the sky. The idea that the Moon can disturb our minds is so old that it is woven into our language itself…
The word ‘lunatic’ comes from the Latin ‘Luna’, meaning Moon, and reflects the ancient belief that mental imbalance rose and fell with the lunar cycle.
Classical thinkers tried to explain this perceived influence in physical terms, for instance, Hippocrates suggested that the human body, being largely made of water, might be affected by the Moon in the same way as the tides. If the Moon could move the seas, it seemed reasonable that it might also stir the fluids of the brain and unsettle our thoughts and emotions. Aristotle also linked the Moon with moisture and instability, reinforcing the idea that it could disturb the mind.
During the Middle Ages, this belief grew stronger as doctors and astrologers paid close attention to lunar phases when diagnosing illnesses. Full Moons were thought to worsen epilepsy, provoke madness and encourage strange or dangerous behaviours. Courts in Europe sometimes accepted ‘Moon Madness’ as a partial explanation for crimes, on the assumption that a person might temporarily lose reason under its light.
Of course we’ve all heard the stories of werewolves and other shapeshifters tied directly to the Full Moon, suggesting that something animal and uncontrollable emerges when the Moon is at its brightest.
In more recent centuries, this idea has lingered as Nurses, Police Officers and Teachers still often say that Full Moons bring busier shifts and more emotional or disruptive behaviour.
Modern studies, however question whether the Moon actually does directly causes these changes to us, suggesting that human perception plays a powerful role. For example, Full Moons are noticeable and memorable, so when something unusual happens on those nights, we are more likely to remember it and connect the two.
There may also be subtle psychological factors at work. The Full Moon is brighter, especially in places without strong artificial lighting, and this can disturb our sleep. Poor sleep is well known to make people feel more emotional, impulsive or unfocused. In this way, the Moon may influence us indirectly, not through mystical forces, but through light and routine. Added to this is the deep symbolic meaning the Moon holds. It has always been linked with cycles, fertility, tides and the hidden world of feelings. When we are already tired or sensitive, these symbols can amplify how we interpret our own moods.
So the idea that the Full Moon makes us feel whacky sits at a crossroads between history, language, folklore and psychology. It is not simply a modern superstition but a belief shaped by ancient medicine, medieval fear and human pattern seeking.
Whether or not the Moon truly alters our minds, it certainly affects how we think about ourselves, reminding us that we are still creatures who look up at the sky and search for meaning in its changes.
No matter the ‘truth’, I choose to believe that the Full Moon hold beautiful, Divine Feminine energy and that she holds the power to affect our lives, energy and of course our dreams too!
If something has been discussed colloquially for centuries our innate understanding of them far transcends the modern perspective and research which we sometimes unfairly attribute more weight to in society today.
So what do YOU think? Does the Full Moon send us all a little whacky? I’d love to hear from you.
